Notes

I was inspired this morning to finally check out Crossfit Persevere in Glastonbury. My ripped hands do not thank me, but it was great to meet Kim Malz and the other CFP members. Aside from racing, most of my workouts are done solo or with Cheryl. It’s a completely different atmosphere working out surrounded by like-minded and supportive athletes. They run a great gym — I’ll be bringing Cheryl by later this week.

My “Cindy” score of 23 is still 4 rounds off of my best. Today was in the low 80s and humid. My PR of 27 was on a rainy night in San Francisco. I hit 26 several times in my garage last winter. I used to be a machine on Cindy: no rest, no splitting up reps. Lately it’s been 7/3 on the push-ups. Is it the weather? Too much time on the bike? I don’t like making excuses. Work harder next time.

Oh man, I'm quite torn on manual vs. video game shifting. I've driven a number of GTIs (up until the most recent iteration, BMWs automated manuals have been rubbish) and they're incredibly fun, but driving a Real Manual is very empowering. I have some time to decide, however. I would definitely recommend an M3 or a 911 (perhaps a Cayman, though I haven't driven one); nothing can match the connectedness of those cars. Even a non-M 3 series feels totally different.

It's ok... this time. ;-) I have a friend who drives a GTI and we hassle each other back and forth about it. They're built on the same platform, but the A3 is considerably nicer overall. I had noticed some of your tweets referencing BMW -- nice choice with the M3. Next to the 911, the M3 is one of my favorite cars. Even the used ones are still expensive. I imagine you're a die-hard manual driver so hurry up before they all become dual-clutch automatics. The day the stick died. Ok, where where we?

Haha, I meant nothing of the sort, just a bad guess! I quite like the A3, and have been eyeing a 1 series myself. I've got a 1997 M3 that is still chugging along well—after 112k, 20 odd track days, and a bunch of autocrossing, I'm still on the original clutch. I'm looking to get a new M3 in a few years, either used (the good financial option) or European Delivery (the exciting option).

As if my torn hands didn't hurt enough, you go and beat my Cindy score and then insult my car! :-( It's an Audi A3. I had wanted a hatchback but the BMW 123i is only available in Europe. The 128i was another option, but a coupe wasn't a practical decision at the time. What I'd really like is a BMW M3 or the Audi A5/S5, but I'll settle for carbon fiber bicycles instead. Which model BMW do you drive?

Those hand rips are rough! I'm sure you lost some time on that. How do you like the GTI?
