Road Ride with Anthony Clark (my MTB racing rival) Emotional states of a worthwhile experience:

I’ve never ridden this far. Hell, I’ve never ridden my road bike more than 25 or 30 miles. I held onto Anthony’s wheel until half way up the first steep climb. Climbing is my specialty, but he’s better. And faster. And can endure more pain. I kept up the best I could until about mile 55. I went through a bottle of water, one accelerade, two viatmin waters, one gatorade, 3 gels, 8 clifbox and half a bag of ‘sharkies’. On the other hand, Anthony drank maybe 3 bottles and 3 or 4 gels. He doesn’t like to stop… but I had no choice. He has the potential of a pro but wonders about the responsibility of producing results. We’ll see what route he chooses. The reality is that he doesn’t understand just how good he is. Side Note: Ten minute Crossfit metcons are not enough (by themselves) to prepare me to ride for this long. I feel very capable of performing high-intensity work for up to 60 minutes. Anything beyond that and the tank is running low. Longer road rides will be necessary if I want to build the endurance required to be a truly competitive racer. However, there’s this question: would I be willing to trade my strength (…and everything earned through years of Crossfit) to be leaner & faster on the bike? Absolutely not. Isn’t this situation why CrossfitEndurance.com was developed? |
